the looking tree
There’s a tree I drive to
see, sometimes
It reminds me that loving is
the death that leads to being
I sit on her roots, looking out
I stroke two fingers on the
smudge of smooth bark, looking in
I leave, looking forward,
‘don’t look back,’ she says,
‘don’t look back.’
